Overnight Oats: The Frugal, Healthy, and Non-Froufrou Version

Though we're pretty much at home all the time now due to COVID-19 quarantine, Bryce and I want to continue on living out a healthy lifestyle. Sure, we've got canned goods and what not, but sometimes we just want to start the day and not have to worry about food prep. One of the easiest ways to prepare breakfast is the night before! And one of the easiest things to prepare for brekkie is overnight oats. It's simple, healthy, easy on the pocket, ingredients will last awhile, and at the end of the day it's super ono (means "delicious")!

I would hardly call this a recipe... it basically involves filling a cup with the fixins' and refrigerating it overnight. You wake up in the morning and VOIALA, breakfast is done! There are probably hundreds of other combinations to make this simple meal, but here's my non-froufrou version of overnight oats.

Ingredients

Okey-dokey-pokey, let's get this show on the road... First, let's list off the ingredients:

B A S I C S

  • Rolled Oats: Any kine. The cheaper the better.

  • Chia Seeds: Buy a big bag because these seeds can last pretty much forever

  • Milk: I prefer almond milk or any kind of nut milk, not only because I am lactose-intolerant, but mainly due to the fact that cow's milk may spoil faster. And our goal today is lasting products.

  • Fruit: Pick ANY fruit(s) you desire. I prefer frozen or dried fruits in these times.

E X T R A S

  • Toppings: Nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, ground cinnamon, etc.

  • Sweeteners: Honey, agave, sugar, etc.

Let's Get Started

As I stated earlier, It's all a matter of putting everything into your cup/mug and then chucking it in the fridge!

  1. Scoop 1/2 cup- 1 cup of rolled oats and 1/3 cup of chia seeds (This may seem like a lot, but it's because I love lot's of chia seeds... they're like a healthier version of baby boba). into a cup or mug. I'm using one of my stemless wine glasses because I simply think it looks adorable.

  2. Add in your toppings. All I've added in is a cinnamon. Choke ("a lot") cinnamon.

  3. Throw in some fruits. I'm only using fresh ones here because Bryce and I got these a few days ago and I needed to use them up now before they got sad and rotten!

  4. Pour in your milk of choice, cover with cling-wrap, and throw it in the fridge overnight!

In the morning you can add in some honey, agave, or any sweetener of choice, mix everything up with a spoon, and you're ready for some brekkie!

I love that this can be customized in so many ways! I hope you enjoyed this short post. Stay safe and stay in, everyone! Mahalo!
